Cambridge University Musical Society is one of the most thriving university music societies in the world.

CUMS consists of a wide variety of ensembles, ensuring there is something for everyone. For instrumentalists, the Society offers two outstanding orchestras: the flagship Cambridge University Orchestra, who perform a variety of symphonic and chamber repertoire with professional conductors and soloists, and the Cambridge University Sinfonia, which is conducted by visiting professionals and the finest student conductors throughout the year. Additionally, Cambridge University Wind Orchestra provides opportunities for wind, brass and percussion players to tackle a challenging and musically diverse repertoire in a sociable environment. For singers, CUMS includes a Symphony Chorus and an elite Chamber Choir, which provide opportunities for singers to perform outside of the Cambridge chapel choir environment.

Please see the left hand menu for the full list of CUMS ensembles and follow each link for further details.

CUMS Ensemble Restructuring for 2017-18

The 2017-18 Season will be a particularly exciting time for CUMS because, following great consideration and planning, the structure of our orchestras is changing.

From October 2017, CUMS will no longer have three orchestras (Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra, CUMS Symphony Orchestra and CUMS Concert Orchestra). Instead, the Society will form two orchestras from the same body of players. These ensembles will be named the Cambridge University Orchestra and the Cambridge University Sinfonia. The Cambridge University Orchestra will be the University’s premier orchestra, which will always work with professional conductors. The CU Orchestra will perform a variety of chamber and symphonic music and will adjust its size accordingly. It will primarily be formed from the current CUCO players, but will sometimes expand to perform larger scale repertoire (hence, ‘Chamber’ has been dropped from the Orchestra’s name). The Cambridge University Sinfonia will be our second orchestra and will always perform symphonic repertoire. It will be conducted by guest professional conductors as well as the finest CUMS student conductors.

We believe this reorganisation will enable both musical excellence and student satisfaction, and we are very excited for the 2017-18 Season. Our new season brochure will be available from the beginning of September and we hope you will find much to enjoy in the year ahead.
