Cambridge University Musical Society: Concerto Competition

CUMS Concerto Competition 2012

Applications are invited for the opportunity to perform a concerto with Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra (CUCO), CUMS Symphony Orchestra, CUMS Concert Orchestra or Cambridge University Wind Orchestra (CUWO) in the academic year 2012-13. Applicants must be in statu pupillariat Cambridge University at the time of the auditions. You do not have to be in statu pupillari for the academic year 2012-13.

There will be 2 rounds of auditions. The first round will be held on Tuesday 31 January 2012 (between 4pm-9pm). Candidates are asked to prepare a whole movement from a concerto lasting no more than 10 minutes to perform to the panel.

If you are successful in the competition you can choose a different concerto to perform next year. No accompanist will be provided; candidates are invited to bring their own. Pianists should also provide an accompanist for their concerto excerpt. The panel may also conduct a brief interview with each candidate.

The final round will be held on Tuesday 14 February 2012 as part of the Cambridge University Lunchtime Concert series. It will be an extended concert soplease be available from 12.30pm - 2.30pm. The finalists will be asked to perform a movement from a concerto lasting no more than 10 minutes to perform to the panel and the public audience. This can be the same excerpt as performed in the first round. No accompanist will be provided; candidates are invited to bring their own. Pianists should also provide an accompanist.

Candidates should send their CV, together with a formal letter of application, by email to Chloe Davidson, CUMS Orchestral Manager, by midnight on Friday 20 January 2012. Application documents should be emailed to cnd26@cam.ac.uk Please include details of the movement and concerto you will be performing in your application. Please note: applications received after this date will not be considered.

The Winner of the CUMS Concerto Competition is given the opportunity to play a concerto with CUCO or CUMS Symphony Orchestra in the following season. The Winner and one of the Runners-up are also invited to give the annual Mary Bevan Recital at Wolfson College, for which a fee of not less than £125 per performer is paid. In 2011 this recital was given by Joe Shiner and Julian Azkoul. The date of the recital in 2012 is Sunday 17 June and begins at 7.30pm.
