CUMS Conducting Competition 2012
Applications are invited for opportunities to conduct CUMS Symphony Orchestra, CUMS Concert Orchestra and Cambridge University Wind Orchestra (CUWO) in the academic year 2012-13. The duties of the Conducting Scholar, who works with CUMS Symphony Orchestra, will include preparing and assisting Martin Yates (Principal Conductor, CUMS Symphony Orchestra) and the guest conductors.
Applicants must be in statu pupillari at Cambridge University at the time of the auditioning and intending to be in statu pupillari for the academic year 2012-13.
There will be 3 rounds in the competition and all will be held on Tuesday 14 February. The first and second round will be held between 11.00 and 18.00, and candidates will have aural tests and be asked to conduct a piano and violin.
Repertoire for the second round, please choose one work from the following:
- Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, 1st movement, from the end of the cadenza to the end of the movement.
- Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.1, 2nd Movement
The third round will be between 18.00 and 22.00. Candidates who progress to the second round will be asked to rehearse the following extracts for a short period with CUMS Symphony Orchestra
Compulsory Work:
- Shostakovich Symphony No.7 (Leningrad) Movement 1 fig 19 - 1st two beats of the bar before fig 48.
- If you do not have access to a score please contact Chloe Davidson for a scanned copy of the excerpt.
AND
Choose one work from thefollowing:
- Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, 1st movement, from the end of the cadenza to the end of the movement.
- Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.1, 2nd Movement
