About CUWO - the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra
CUWO is a top quality wind ensemble, led by talented student conductors, with repertoire ranging from wind band classics to recently-composed contemporary pieces. In recent years, this has included music by Bernstein, Dukas, Gershwin, Gorb, Gregson, Hesketh, Holst, McNeff, Rossini, Vaughan Williams and John Williams.
Entry to CUWO is by audition in October, and many wind players opt to play in both CUWO and one of the other orchestras, as they rehearse at different times, and offer very different challenges.
Those interested in auditioning for the CUWO for the 2011-12 Season should see the auditions page. Highlights this year will include:
- 29 November 2011 Timothy Jackson Passacaglia, Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett Trumpet Concerto and Copland Fanfare for the Common Man, with soloist Matt Letts, conducted by Nia Llewelyn Jones (West Road Concert Hall)
- 12 March 2012 concert for schools (West Road Concert Hall)
- March 2012 joint concert with Oxford University Wind Orchestra (Oxford)
- 10 May 2012 concert in conjunction with CUMS Concert Orchestra, to include Gershwin Strike Up the Band and Bernstein Symphonic Dances from 'West Side Story', conducted by Will Cole and Nia Llewelyn Jones (West Road Concert Hall)
