Cambridge University Musical Society: Who's Who

CUWO: Who's Who?

Simon Thomas Jacobs

Student Conductor

Simon Thomas Jacobs is currently a third year music student and Senior Organ Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge, where he regularly accompanies and assists in the direction of the internationally renowned choir, both at home and abroad. This summer, he performed as both a soloist and accompanist with the choir in concerts as part of the Munich Opera Festival and Innsbruck Early Music Festival and directed concerts on a tour of Austria. Future engagements with the choir include acting as chorus master for Handel's 'Messiah' with the Académie Sainte-Cécile, directed by Phillipe Couvert, as part of the Festival 'Musique sacrée à Notre-Dame de l'Epine' and playing for the world première performance and BBC Radio 3 broadcast of John Tavener's new cycle of Christmas Carols, Ex Maria Virgine.
Simon began conducting during his time as a sixth form music and academic scholar at Forest School, North East London, where he directed both the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. Since coming to Cambridge he has worked with the Clare College Music Society Orchestra and also founded his own ensemble 'The Clare Consort', whose début concert of Haydn's 'Nelson Mass' met with much praise. He is very much looking forward to working with CUWO over the coming academic year.

Elizabeth Prayle

CUWO Treasurer and Social Sec

Elizabeth is a clarinettist and a second year natsci. She'll be the one who collects your subs and organises all the socials - we keep her very busy throughout the year. If you ever feel like a trip to the pub after a rehearsal, just let her know, and there'll be plenty of people willing to join you.

Faye Dorey

CUWO Education and Publicity

Faye is a 3rd year vet student. She started playing percussion at the age of 10 and has played for a variety of different groups, including orchestras, jazz bands and in the pit for musicals, but her favourite has always been the Wind Band. She is now enjoying her first experience of being involved in the running of an ensemble. She organises the posters for our concerts and sorts out fun stuff for the schools concert, such as slide shows to go with our music. If you have any ideas, get in touch with her.

Alex Presland

CUWO Membership

Alex is a third year natsci who plays the trombone. He enjoys drama and plays with Selwyn Jazz. He'll be chasing you up if you miss a rehearsal, so please let him know in advance if you have a problem.

Mark Scott

CUWO Sponsorship

Mark is a fourth year physicist and plays the tuba. He tries to find funding for us so that we can do new and exciting things. This year we're hoping to be able to get a guest conductor in to come and work with us.

Simon Smart

CUWO Webmaster and Percussion Manager

Simon is a fourth year chemist who plays percussion. He plays with the internet and knows where everything lives in the CUMS cupboard.
