Cambridge University Symphony Chorus Auditions

Michaelmas Term 2018

Auditions will be held in the St Paul’s Church, Hills Road as follows:

Friday 5 October 2018:         15.10 – 16.22
Saturday 6 October 2018:    15.10 – 16.22
Sunday 7 October 2018:       15.10 – 16.22

To arrange an audition, prospective members need to register here. Prospective members will then be contacted by the Registrar to arrange a time.

The audition is very friendly and lasts about eight minutes. The audition is carried out by the Musical Director, Richard Wilberforce, in the presence of an independent professional assessor. You will be asked some of the following:

  • Sing some scales and/or arpeggios to demonstrate vocal range and quality.
  • Sing a short melody: the melody will be played twice on the piano first.
  • Complete some simple ear tests: e.g. picking out a note from a chord.
  • Pitch some basic intervals.
  • Sing a short passage at sight: an opportunity for a ‘second go’ is offered, credit being given for the ability to correct at a subsequent reading.

In addition, you are asked to prepare No. 26 (Lasset uns nun gehen gen Bethlehem) from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio for the audition. You will be asked to perform it with accompaniment, in German and at standard modern pitch (A=440). On this occasion, you will be not be judged on the quality of your German pronunciation.

CU Symphony Chorus rehearses weekly on Thursday nights 7.30pm – 9.45pm during the university term in St Paul’s Church, Hills Road.
